For the conquest of the Americas 500 years ago, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador urged Spain and the Vatican to apologize to the indigenous people of the now Mexico.
Obrador, 65, anti-establishment leftist sent a letter to King Felipe VI of Spain and Pope Francis called for a full amount to the abuses and urging them to apologize to the now Mexican people for the violations of what we now call their human rights.
He also reopened the debate over Spain’s centuries of dominance on the indigenous people of Mexico in the video he posted in Comalcalco, urging Spain and the Vatican pope to apologize for the conquest and the rights violations committed in its aftermath. “There were massacres and oppression. The so-called conquest was waged with the sword and the cross. They built their churches on top of the (indigenous) temples,” he said.
Spain’s reaction was swift and unequivocal, It said that it deeply regrets that the letter sent by the Mexican president (whose contents they firmly reject) has been made public. It also said, The arrival, 500 years ago, of Spaniards to present Mexican territory cannot be judged in the light of contemporary considerations. Our two brother nations have always known how to read our shared past without anger and with a constructive perspective, as free peoples with a shared history and extraordinary influence.
Lopez Obrador took his place in the office after a landslide election in December. A folksy populist, He shows no mercy on going after the traditional elites but had so far had cordial relations with Spain. He was later due to visit the nearby city of centla, which was the stage of one of the first battles between Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and the indigenous peoples of the land now known as Mexico.it had led to the start of 300 years of Spanish rule over Mexico.
