On Friday President Donald Trump blamed Democrats for having “the weakest immigration laws anywhere in the World,” talking about current state of US-Mexico immigration policy.
The DEMOCRATS have given us the weakest immigration laws anywhere in the World. Mexico has the strongest, & they make more than $100 Billion a year on the U.S. Therefore, CONGRESS MUST CHANGE OUR WEAK IMMIGRATION LAWS NOW, & Mexico must stop illegals from entering the U.S….

….through their country and our Southern Border. Mexico has for many years made a fortune off of the U.S., far greater than Border Costs. If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING…..

….the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week. This would be so easy for Mexico to do, but they just take our money and “talk.” Besides, we lose so much money with them, especially when you add in drug trafficking etc.), that the Border closing would be a good thing!

He pointed out how Mexico has the strongest immigration policy and stated that “they make more than $100 Billion a year on the U.S.”
And therefore in order to “stop illegals from entering the U.S. through their country and our Southern Border” Trump put out a deadline saying if “Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug our Southern Border,” He “will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week.”
Following these tweets, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen put out a statement describing the situation with Trump and the US-Mexico as “a cascading crisis.”
Nielsen said, “The system is in freefall. DHS is doing everything possible to respond to a growing humanitarian catastrophe while also securing our borders, but we have reached peak capacity and are now forced to pull from other missions to respond to the emergency.”
He added, “the volume of ‘vulnerable populations’ arriving is without precedent. This makes it far more difficult to care for them and to prioritize individuals legitimately fleeing persecution.”
US policymakers and the Congress are scrambling to check whether the president is in legally bound to do so and if you yes then what are the necessary steps to be taken.
But the main question is whether the closing of the border will stop illegal immigrants from entering the US.
The short answer is Yes, to an extent. And the long answer is, it complicated.
This is because even if increasing border security at the southern border will increase the likelihood that immigrants who are trying to cross the border are more likely to be seen by the security personnel.
But it is also very likely that seeing the security activity they could just avoid the point of entry entirely and rather try some other method.
There also other ways immigrants get into the US like hiding in trucks and ships. And there is also the case for those immigrants who get into the US legally but then overstay their visa here.
So, whatever trump may do next week (because only trump knows what he will do) we can just wait and watch as the events unfold.
