Steven Moffat hints at Sherlock season 5 renewal alongside Benedict Cumberbatch

After the release of ‘The Final Problem’ back in 2017, we haven’t heard much about the possible renewal of the Sherlock. The British crime drama aired back in 2010 for the first time on BBC One. Sherlock features the highly intelligent (one in the world, self-described) detective and his fellow sidekick and war veteran Dr. John Watson and their thrilling journey of solving mysteries and protecting themselves from their own arch enemies. The show is set in contemporary period instead of Victorian period fantasy except for one particular episode ‘The Abominable Bride.’

Mark Gattis (who also plays Sherlock brother, Mycroft Holmes) and Steven Moffat serve as the show’s creator and showrunner for all 13 episodes. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the titular character Sherlock himself. Benedict Cumberbatch told in an interview that he would love to be back if season 5 is happening. Co-show runner Steven Moffat on Digital Spy said, “I haven’t really thought about it. Mark’s been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.” While addressing in the Vogue in 2014 Cumberbatch said: “If we can keep the quality up, I can’t imagine that I will ever get tired of being Sherlock.”

Sherlock season 4 final episode, The Final Problem gathered quite a lot of negative reviews. The critics and every fan all around the didn’t like the closure of the event in the final episode. It was not twisting, mysterious, or engaging like how the past season finale left in a cliffhanger. It was more like a happy ending, and the boys are back in business thanks to Mary (Watson beloved wife) who left an encouraging video to Watson for continuing to work with Sherlock, Mycroft explained to parents why Eurus (Holmes’ sister and Sherlock’s most prominent enemy) was told dead. Sherlock often visits the prison with his family members and plays violin with his sister. This happy ending is not what the Sherlock fans wanted. Well actually, the happy things in Sherlock aren’t what we expect. (How Selfish we are!)

On a Facebook post, Steven Moffat said that the first four seasons are the ‘Chapter One’ and he went on posting a picture ‘Chapter Two” mentioning “our boys consciously living the myth and battling wrong-doers.” So this could mean Season 5 is a go, but neither the showrunners nor the BBC One Network has confirmed about the show’s renewal.

But if the show goes on renewal, we can expect in January 2021.
