It might be troubling for the Marvel fans to imagine Thor played by anyone other than Chris Hemsworth. But apparently, Alexander Skarsgard was pretty damn close on getting the role.
In 2009, just a year after True Blood was premiered, the actor told MTV that he met with Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige and director of Thor Kenneth Branagh.
“Yeah, I met with Kevin Feige a few times, and the director as well, and there was definitely some truth in that, yeah,” said Alexander.
Skarsgård tried on the costume, held the hammer, and also filmed an audition in the garb. This is how close he was about getting the role.
Afterward, when an MTV interviewer said that the actor had a perfect look to bring Thor to life, Skarsgård replied, “So did I.” As far as the role of Thor is concerned, Hemsworth went on to play the God of Thunder in multiple films. Although his future in the MCU is not sure after Avengers: Endgame, the Australian actor confirmed that he’d love to keep playing the character of Thor.
“Thor is just like a big blond guy. It could have been one of eight big blond guys,” Stentz said once. Kevin Smith then also asked if Alexander Skarsgard might have played Thor.
Yeah. I love the guy Skarsgard, but I think Hemsworth was the right choice. Just that frickin’ charm he brings out in character that couldn’t be brought out by someone else.” Said the director.
