Major upsets in Wimbledon 2019: Zverev, Tsitsipas, Osaka and Venus

Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas exited in the first round of Wimbledon. Jiri Vesely and Thomas Fabbiano caused the major upset by defeating them and progressing to the next round.

It was surprising to see both stars failing to progress to next round especially as many consider them apt to fill the shoes of Big Three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.

Perhaps the biggest upset in the tournament till now was Naomi Osaka and Venus Williams exiting in the first round. What makes Venus’ exit even more shocking is that 15-year-old American, Cori Guaff defeated her. She defeated Venus Williams 6-4 6-4 in the first round on Monday. Undoubtedly one of the most significant achievement for Guff considering she wasn’t even born when Venus had already scalped two single’s title.

The second big upset came when two-time Grand Slam champion and World No 2 Naomi Osaka lost 7-6 (4), 6-2 to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. Osaka is the first top-seeded player to exit the tournament. Osaka had a hard time deciphering the way Putintseva mixed up the pace and spin.
