A UK based private software company, Canonical Ltd’s official GitHub account has been hacked recently by unknown hackers.
Canonical Ltd is responsible for the distribution of popular Ubuntu Linux. The hackers might have created 11 new empty repositories on Github. The existing data and hasn’ been neither modified nor removed but the hack seems to have 11 new repos with a name CAN_GOT_HAXXD_1 maintained in sequential order.
David from the company said unauthorized access had compromised the resources. The official statement issued by David reads, “We can confirm that on 2019-07-06 there was a Canonical owned account on GitHub whose credentials were compromised and used to create repositories and issues among other activities. “Canonical has removed the compromised account from the Canonical organization in GitHub and is still investigating the extent of the breach, but there is no indication at this point that any source code or PII was affected.”
Furthermore, the guy said that millions of users who are enjoying the use of the Operating System would not get affected at all due to these attacks. Thanks to the company’s new hosting platform, Launchpad which directly maintains the overall Linux distributions that if credentials on GitHub account were also modified wouldn’t be a pain in the head. For a fact, Launchpad is disconnected from GitHub.
The company believes all its user should trust them so they have revealed the updates and they even confirmed to share all the details while they are currently inspecting the source code.
