We build a story for ourselves, which we want to believe in, a story that extends only up to the verge of our thinking. But what if this is just a temptation which lets us go deeper and deeper, to no avail?
The same is the story of the upcoming novel Death in Her Hands by the very young and talented American novelist Ottessa Moshfegh. Since her gripping debut with Eileen (2015), Moshfegh has penned great ingenious novels of Literary-Fiction, unnerving readers to their core. Death in Her Hands will also take you to a world where you’ll find hidden realities of life in the eerie mysteries you encounter. So let’s know more about it.
Death in Her Hands by Ottessa Moshfegh: A Preface
The book covers the story of an aged woman who is connected to the deaths of two people- one of her husband and one of a complete stranger. Vesta Gul has just moved to a new house to live in solitude with her pet dog, far away from the place where she and her late husband used to live. But when she finds what was waiting for her in the woods during a random walk with her dog, it shakes her away.
It’s not a person, not an animal or any other creature but a small handwritten cryptic note pinned to the ground, which reads, “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body”. She looks around, but no dead body is there.
This throws Vesta into a ditch of a thousand brain-storming questions, “Who’s Magda? “Who is ‘me’?” and “Why would nobody know who killed her?”.
But now she takes charge to unfold this mystery. Being completely unknown to the new neighborhood, she trusts no one but herself for this. Blame her lonely state of mind, but that’s what she finds herself around now. As she indulges herself in this investigation, she gets more entangled into it. With her past and present crossing their ways, she finds that either there is a much innocent explanation to this death or something much more appalling and sinister.
Named the Most Anticipated Book of 2020 by EW and Vogue, Death in Her Hands is suspense, mystical dark-comedy waiting to be on the top of your shelves as soon as you get your hands on it.
