Few organizations have done as much to illuminate the possibilities of contemporary opera than American Opera Initiative (AOI). The program, founded in 2012 by Francesca Zambello, is a one-year lab of sorts for aspiring opera composers and librettists to create, workshop, rehearse, and premiere a short opera. Amongst the works to premiere under the program are “The Last Hotel” by Huang Ruo, “The Gospel According to the Other Mary” by Tobias Picker, and “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs” by Mason Bates, all of which went on to achieve considerable success and critical acclaim.

AOI’s commitment to fostering new talent and pushing the boundaries of operatic storytelling has made it a vital force in the contemporary opera landscape. The program provides a unique platform for emerging artists to develop their craft, collaborate with experienced mentors, and bring their visions to life on stage. This dedication to innovation has resulted in a steady stream of exciting and thought-provoking new works that are shaping the future of opera.
