Trek-Segafredo’s Madone SLR: A Look at the Bike That Helped Mads Pedersen to Victory

A New Era of Design

safe-2665.jpeg

Toms Skujiņš, a key member of Trek-Segafredo, took to the opening stages of the Tour de France aboard the US brand’s newly redesigned Madone SLR. This bike, featuring a radical hole in the seat tube, was a collaborative effort between the team and Trek engineers. The goal? To create a faster and lighter Madone, a mission that culminated in Mads Pedersen’s impressive stage 13 win in Saint-Etienne.

Pedersen’s victory, a blend of speed, strength, and tactical acumen, was a fitting tribute to a bike that was also conceived with meticulous planning. However, Pedersen’s success was deeply intertwined with the support of his teammates, a role Skujiņš excels at.

The IsoFlow Innovation

The most striking feature of the new Madone is undoubtedly the “IsoFlow” cutout in the seat tube. This replaces Trek’s previous adjustable ISoSpeed decoupler, which allowed for fore/aft flex of the seatpost for rider comfort. IsoFlow, according to Trek, provides comparable compliance while shaving around 300 grams from the bike’s overall weight.

Skujins’s Madone showcased the new IsoFlow design, seamlessly integrating this innovative feature into its frame.

Refined Cockpit and Stem Integration

Beyond the IsoFlow, the new Madone boasts a redesigned cockpit system that positions the rider more ergonomically. The handlebar features flared drops and slightly sloped tops with narrower hoods, mirroring the natural bend of the wrists. This attention to detail enhances comfort and control during extended rides.

The integrated stem has also been redesigned, although Skujiņš opted for a non-integrated stem setup. This flexibility is a noteworthy feature of the new Madone, allowing riders to personalize their cockpit configuration and choose their preferred stem and handlebars.

A Powerhouse Drivetrain and Lightweight Wheels

Trek-Segafredo riders are equipped with a suite of SRAM Red eTap AXS components, including a Quarq power meter for precise data analysis. Skujiņš’s setup includes a 54/41 chainring combo paired with a 10-28 cassette, providing a wide range of gearing options. This extensive gear spread is particularly valuable in the demanding terrain of the Tour de France, allowing riders to tackle both steep climbs and high-speed descents with ease.

The bike’s aerodynamic efficiency is further enhanced by Bontrager’s Aeolus RSL 62 wheels, wrapped in Pirelli tubeless tires. Skujiņš’s choice of tubeless tires reflects a growing trend in professional cycling, offering improved puncture protection and reduced rolling resistance compared to traditional tubular tires.

Dominque Role and Future Stage Opportunities

Skujins’s performance in the 2022 Tour de France exemplifies the crucial role domestiques play in supporting their star teammates. As the race progresses, he’ll continue to provide invaluable assistance to Trek-Segafredo’s pursuit of further victories.

Stage 19, a transition stage with a potential for a sprint finish, presents a prime opportunity for Pedersen to capitalize on the depleted number of remaining sprinters. Skujiņš, the current Latvian ITT champion, will have his chance to shine on stage 20, a challenging 40.7km time trial that could potentially determine the final destination of the yellow jersey.
