Lana Del Rey’s America: A Shocking Reflection of Reality

“The Echoes of a Dystopian Dream: A Critical Reckoning with Lana Del Rey’s America”

Imagine a world where the American Dream is a fleeting mirage, where the voice of a generation’s lost innocence is a perpetual whisper in the wind, and the promise of a utopian future is a distant memory. Welcome to the hauntingly beautiful, and eerily familiar, landscape of Lana Del Rey’s America. For decades, Del Rey’s songs have been a sonic tapestry of nostalgia, evoking a sense of longing for a bygone era that feels both timeless and timeless-late.

From the velvety softness of “Video Games” to the sultry, nostalgia-tinged sensuality of “Summertime Sadness,” Del Rey’s music has become an integral part of the cultural lexicon. But beneath the surface of her retro-inflected pop lies a disturbing truth: a world where the American Dream is a myth, and the voices of those

Lana Del Rey Isn’t Real, But Her Version of America Is

At Coachella in 2024, I’ve seen dozens of videos wherein, upon hearing people shout “Lana!”, Lana Del Rey turns around, flashes a beautiful smile, and hugs them, takes pictures, shares her vape— these are always shared with some kind of explanation about how gracefully she handles celebrity and how genuine she is in her interactions with her fans. I almost agree: her relationship to celebrity is wise. She doesn’t tour non-stop, rather playing targeted dates; she has had pop-up merch opportunities and online drops; she keeps turning out brilliant records (and in fact, her most recent, Did you know there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.? has, what I consider, to be the most important song of the last decade on it in “A&W”). She’s rarely on social media and, on a fairly regular basis, deletes it all together. What I take issue with is that I don’t think there is such a thing as a genuine relationship with fans, and that even if there were, I don’t think we can accuse Lana Del Rey of having one. After all: what does her family call her? Her husband? What do her friends call her in private moments? A nom de plume? Her real name? Her nickname, Lizzie? How in the hell would I know? Of course, the question has been raised, and my favorite response— on a Reddit forum, r/lanadelrey, was “I am too high for this.” There were a lot of more nuanced answers that all came down to “well, she said one thing here—” “but another there—.” Some people claimed her family calls her Lizzie but no one else does. Some said her manager just calls her “L.” LDR waitressing at another American icon, Waffle House, while on break from tour in 2023
