In recent years, Dungeons & Dragons has undergone a remarkable transformation from a niche hobby to a mainstream phenomenon. From its presence in Stranger Things to movies and video games, D&D has become an integral part of popular culture. This shift is largely attributed to its adaptability and the ever-growing demand for fantasy content.

From Tabletop to Streaming

The rise of Dungeons & Dragons can be traced back to the 1980s, when the game first gained popularity. However, it wasn’t until the 2010s that D&D started to gain mainstream recognition. The game’s influence can be seen in various forms of media, including Stranger Things, which has been instrumental in introducing D&D to a new generation of fans.

Moreover, the success of movies like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and video games such as Baldur’s Gate III has further solidified D&D’s position in the fantasy space. This surge in popularity has created a demand for more D&D-related content, making it an attractive prospect for streaming giants like Netflix.

The Perfect Storm

The convergence of Netflix, Hasbro Entertainment, and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment has led to the greenlighting of The Forgotten Realms series. This partnership brings together industry experts with a proven track record in the fantasy genre.

Shawn Levy, known for his work on Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine, brings his expertise in creating engaging and immersive fantasy worlds. Meanwhile, Drew Crevello, creator of WeCrashed, brings his experience in crafting compelling narratives. Hasbro Entertainment, with its ownership of the Dungeons & Dragons IP, provides the necessary resources and support to bring this ambitious project to life.

Behind the Scenes of The Forgotten Realms

Creative Team

The creative team behind The Forgotten Realms series consists of industry veterans with a proven track record in the fantasy genre. Drew Crevello, who serves as the showrunner, has written the pilot and will executive produce the series alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Levine of 21 Laps Entertainment.

Shawn Levy, with his experience in creating immersive fantasy worlds, will bring his expertise to the project. Dan Levine, with his background in producing fantasy content, will provide additional support to the team. The combined expertise of this creative team will be instrumental in bringing the world of The Forgotten Realms to life.

From Paramount+ to Netflix

EXCLUSIVE: In one of Netflix’s biggest TV bets in the fantasy space to date, the streamer has taken in for development The Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series, sources tell Unionjournalism. The project comes from one of the top producers on the streamer’s roster, Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Deadpool & Wolverine), writer-showrunner Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) and Hasbro Entertainment. As the title suggests, the proposed series will take place in the iconic campaign setting and centerpiece of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, a fantasy world released in 1987 that has become home to some of the brand’s most famous characters and launchpad for some of D&D’s most popular adventures.

The source material for the 2023 movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comes from within the Realms setting. Crevello wrote the pilot and serves as showrunner; he will executive produce the potential series with Levy and Dan Levine of Levy’s 21 Laps, sources said. Watch on Unionjournalism Reps for Netflix and Hasbro Entertainment declined comment.

Ever since then-Hasbro subsidiary eOne in 2021 made launching a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series a top priority, Netflix has felt like a logical home for it given the major boost the streamer has given to the classic fantasy role-playing game through its prominent presence on one of Netflix’s biggest shows, Stranger Things. The project’s initial incarnation, overseen creatively by Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, with Crevello subsequently joining him as showrunner, landed at Paramount+ in early 2023 with a straight-to-series order and eOne co-producing alongside Paramount Pictures, the studio behind Honor Among Thieves. The project ultimately didn’t move forward amid a strategy shift at Paramount+ and ownership change at eOne, which was acquired by Lionsgate.

With Hasbro’s in-house division Hasbro Entertainment now in charge, the Dungeons & Dragons adaptation underwent redevelopment with Crevello at the helm and a brand new concept not related to the past D&D development with Thurber and Paramount or the Honor Among Thieves movie. The project drew interest from Levy, who joined it in a serendipitous team-up since he is director/executive producer on Stranger Things. With Levy on board, The Forgotten Realms series was taken out to Netflix where 21 Laps has a deal. After lengthy negotiations, which is not unusual for an IP of that caliber, I hear the fantasy series is now set at the streamer for further development.

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, Netflix has given the greenlight to a highly anticipated series based on the beloved tabletop game, Dungeons & Dragons. This development marks the culmination of years of speculation and anticipation, as fans have eagerly awaited the opportunity to see their favorite characters and settings brought to life on the small screen. According to sources, the series is set to be a live-action adaptation, with a focus on the game’s rich lore and immersive storytelling.

The significance of this announcement cannot be overstated, as it represents a bold step forward for geek culture and its growing influence on mainstream media. The success of this series has far-reaching implications, not only for the gaming community but also for the broader entertainment industry. By greenlighting a project that is deeply rooted in niche fandom, Netflix is sending a clear signal that it values and is committed to telling stories that resonate with diverse audiences. As the series moves forward, it will be fascinating to see how it adapts the game’s complex mythology and characters for a broader audience.

As fans eagerly await the premiere of the series, they can expect a thought-provoking and engaging story that will challenge their perceptions and ignite their imaginations. The real question, however, is not what the series will look like, but what it will say about the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on our collective psyche. Will it be a celebration of the game’s rich history, or a bold reimagining of its core principles? Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain – the Dungeons & Dragons Netflix series has the potential to be a cultural phenomenon that will leave a lasting impact on the world of entertainment.
