Artistic Insights and Analysis

The Story Behind “Christ and the Sinner”

Max Beckmann’s 1917 painting, “Christ and the Sinner,” is a thought-provoking representation of a biblical passage, exploring themes of forgiveness and hypocrisy. The painting shows a passage from the Gospel of John, where Jesus is asked to determine the fate of a woman accused of adultery.

Beckmann’s experience as a medical orderly in World War I heavily influenced his work, leading to a new style and a focus on biblical themes. The painting’s use of symbolism and abstract style invites viewers to interpret and reflect on its meaning and significance.

The artist’s constant exposure to pain and death during the war led to a breakdown and discharge on medical grounds. While recuperating, he began to paint large biblical scenes in a new angular and more abstract style, including “Christ and the Sinner.”
