Breaking: Engineering Center Revolutionizes Education in Ohio

## A New Era for Kent: DeWine Cuts Ribbon on Innovation Hub Kent, Ohio, is known for its vibrant college town atmosphere and rich history. But today, the city is stepping into the future. Governor Mike DeWine joined local leaders yesterday to officially open the doors to the brand new Engineering and Advanced Technologies Center, a gleaming symbol of investment in innovation and a blueprint for economic growth. This isn’t just another building; it’s a catalyst for job creation, a magnet for cutting-edge research, and a testament to Kent’s commitment to shaping the industries of tomorrow.

Practical Applications and Internship Opportunities

The new Engineering and Advanced Technologies Center in Kent offers students a wide range of practical applications and internship opportunities to develop their skills and prepare for in-demand careers. With the center’s state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, students can gain hands-on experience in computer-aided design and engineering technologies, electronics, robotics, and programming, and an engineering academy.

Students like Grace, a junior at Theodore Roosevelt High School, are looking forward to using the center’s resources to gain real-world experience. “We do a lot of the basics,” she said. “How to set a machine, how to make sure it’s safe. We learn the basics here so when we do an internship, we already know things coming in.” These skills are crucial in helping prevent costly mistakes, Grace said. “No one wants to make a $20,000 fix.”

This summer, Grace has an internship at OGS Industries, which is headquartered in Akron. After that, she said she was planning to study architecture. For that, she said she was looking forward to using the center’s new computer numerical control milling machines (CNC mills), which are programmable and automatic. CNC mills can create custom items and parts.

Student Perspectives and Benefits

Hands-On Learning and Skill Development

Students are excited about the opportunities the center provides for hands-on learning and skill development. “I’m looking forward to the increased abilities, and having more room,” said Grace. “I’m looking forward to being able to step back and not worry about bumping into someone.”

Tae Smith, a junior at Theodore Roosevelt High School, said he was still exploring career options, but that he enjoyed working with the advanced machines and hoped to find a job shadowing opportunity. “At first I wanted to be in construction, but I don’t think that was a good fit for me,” Tae said.

Preparing for the Workforce

The center’s programs and equipment are designed to prepare students for in-demand careers in fields such as engineering, technology, and manufacturing. With the center’s resources, students can gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in these fields.

According to Gov. Mike DeWine’s office, the center will increase student capacity and support three high-demand career tech programs: computer-aided design and engineering technologies; electronics, robotics, and programming; and an engineering academy.

Increased Opportunities and Dreams

Students are excited about the increased opportunities the center provides for pursuing their career aspirations. For Grace, the center’s resources will help her achieve her dream of studying architecture. “I like building and working on models on computers,” she said. “I’ve worked with the manual ones but you can do work with more precision on the automatic.”

Implications and Future Outlook

Expanding Opportunities for Young People

The center is expected to increase opportunities for students in the Six District Educational Compact, which includes Kent, Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Stow-Munroe Falls, Tallmadge, and Woodridge school districts. According to Mary Jane Stanchina, the executive director of the Six District Educational Compact, the center is a dream several years in the making.

Economic Impact and Workforce Development

The center is expected to have a significant economic impact on the region, with the potential to develop a skilled workforce that can meet the needs of local businesses. With the center’s resources, students can gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in in-demand careers, which can help drive economic growth and development.

A Model for Future Education and Training

The center is seen as a model for future education and training initiatives in Ohio and beyond. With its state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, the center provides a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and develop the skills needed to succeed in in-demand careers.

According to Gov. Mike DeWine, the center is “one more way to expand the opportunities for young people.” With the center’s resources, students can gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a rapidly changing economy.
