The question on everyone’s mind now is: how did they do it?

Capitals’ Historic Comeback: A New Era for the Franchise?

Series Clincher: A Comeback for the Ages

The Washington Capitals ended the Montreal Canadiens’ season with a 4-1 victory at Capital One Arena on Wednesday night, taking the first-round series four games to one. The Game 5 effort delivered the Capitals their first playoff series win since they defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games during the 2018 Stanley Cup Final.

Waiting for the Caps in the second round are the Carolina Hurricanes. The club’s Metropolitan Division rivals also moved on to the second round in just five games, putting the finishing touches on their series against the New Jersey Devils with a 5-4 double overtime win on Tuesday night.

The Capitals will have home-ice advantage, hosting the first two games of the series, after finishing atop the NHL’s Eastern Conference in the regular season with 111 standings points. The Hurricanes finished second in the Metro, 12 points behind the Caps.

The two teams split their regular-season series 2-2, which at times got incredibly heated. Carolina finished ahead in goal differential, outscoring the Capitals 14-11. The Capitals took the last game of the regular-season series 5-4 in a shootout on April 10.

Preparing for the Hurricanes: A New Challenge Awaits

From a process perspective, the Capitals struggled against the Hurricanes at five-on-five. In their four games, the Caps saw just 36.5 percent of shot attempts, 43.3 percent of expected goals, and 43 percent of scoring chances.

However, they did own 53.7 percent of the high-danger chances, primarily due to their 17-7 advantage from the April 10 win.

“Obviously, we’re playing a real good opponent coming up next,” Dylan Strome said. “Going to be a totally different test with the way they play, but we’ll watch some video, we’ll study up, and we’ll be ready to go.

“Everyone kinda knows how they play,” he added later. “They dump a lot of pucks in, they don’t let you have a lot of zone time. We’re going to need to find a way to combat that. They’re a great team. We’ve had some pretty good games with them this year, some physical games, so I expect a little bit more of what we saw in this series. But it’s going to be huge to have the puck. We need the puck.”

Inside the Minds of the Players: Motivation and Focus

Lars Eller, who scored the Capitals’ last series-winning goal nearly seven years ago, is confident that his team can perform under pressure.

“I think we’re just comfortable when the games are close all year,” he said Tuesday. “We don’t deviate from our game plan. I don’t think anybody’s trying to do too much, or we’re not getting shaky or nervous. All year, it’s been the same now in the playoffs — we just stay the course and we find a way to win those games and get that goal, whether it’s early in the third or late in the third or overtime.”

After a 6-3 loss in Game 3, the Capitals bounced back to close out their trip to Montreal, putting up a four-goal third period in Game 4 to win 5-2.

Pierre-Luc Dubois hoped the team could channel that momentum into their fourth win of the series on Wednesday.

“It’s funny. (Somebody once said,) ‘The series doesn’t start till somebody loses at home,’ and that’s finally happened,” he said. “So it’s our turn to win at home next game to close this series out. You never want it to drag. Obviously, they’re going to be playing probably their best game of the season. They don’t want to go back home empty-handed. So for us, it’s going to be about preparing today. We had a good practice, tomorrow we’ll have good meetings, and we’ll be ready to go.”

A victory in Game 5 would also see the Capitals clinch a series at home for the first time in a decade.

All six of the Caps’ most recent series wins have come on the road, including all four rounds of their 2018 Cup run, and they last sent a team packing from DC in 2015, when they downed the New York Islanders in Game 7 of the first round.

Even before the 10-year drought since last clinching at home, the Capitals have won most of their playoff series on the road. Just eight of the franchise’s 20 series wins have been at home, including only three during the Ovechkin era.

Only three players from that 2015 team — Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson, and Tom Wilson — will play for the Capitals Wednesday night.

Wilson said Tuesday that neither the 3-1 series lead nor the chance to end the series in DC would impact the team’s approach to the game, but he acknowledged the desire to win on home ice.

“In this group, we don’t think about that stuff,” he said. “We’re focused on one game. We’ve got a very narrow focus right now. We’re not looking years back, last year’s group, two years, five years, whatever.

“We want to keep this machine rolling in here. We want to keep these guys dialed in. You always want to win on home ice; you always want to win every game. We’ll be extremely motivated. We’re working really hard to get it done.”

Nic Dowd, meanwhile, saw Game 5 not just as a single game but partially as the culmination of a season’s worth of work.

He was part of the last Capitals team to win three games in a series, but that 2019 squad dropped both Game 6 and Game 7 to the Carolina Hurricanes to end the season.

After this year’s roster has put in so much for the opportunity they’ll have on Wednesday night, Dowd wants to make sure he and his teammates make the most of it this time.

“82 games plus playoffs, you put yourself into a position to have success and then when you have an opportunity to end a series or close the door, you have to take advantage of that,” he said. “You play all year for home ice and to put yourself in a good situation and we’ve done that, but that job’s not done and we still have a lot of work to do. It’s going to be a rivalry game, it’s going to be a tough game.”

Analyzing the Series: What Went Right for the Capitals

Capitalizing on Momentum: A Key Factor in the Comeback

The Capitals’ ability to bounce back from a 6-3 loss in Game 3 was a key factor in their comeback.

The impact of a strong third period in Game 4, which saw the Capitals score four goals, also cannot be overstated.

The team’s confidence in their game plan was another crucial aspect of their series win.

The Importance of Home Ice Advantage

The Capitals will have home-ice advantage in their series against the Hurricanes, hosting the first two games of the series.

This advantage could prove crucial, as the Capitals have historically struggled on the road in the playoffs.

However, with the momentum from their series win against the Canadiens, the Capitals will be looking to make the most of their home-ice advantage.

The Capitals’ First Home Series Win in a Decade

The Psychological Advantage of Playing in Front of Their Fans

Playing in front of their fans can be a significant psychological advantage for the Capitals. The rush of energy and support from the crowd can boost their morale and confidence, giving them an edge over their opponents.

This is especially true for the Capitals, who have struggled in the playoffs in recent years. A win at home can be a huge momentum-booster for the team and help them build confidence heading into the second round.

The Opportunity to Build Momentum for the Next Series

The Capitals have a great opportunity to build momentum heading into the second round. A win in Game 5 can give them a boost of confidence and help them carry that momentum into the next series.

This is especially important for the Capitals, who have struggled to find consistency in the playoffs in recent years. Building momentum early in the second round can help them establish a rhythm and make it harder for their opponents to catch up.

The Hurricanes’ Dominant Five-on-Five Play

The Hurricanes were far and away the NHL’s top five-on-five possession team, owning 59.5 percent of shot attempts during the regular season. They also finished with the top expected goals for percentage (56.3 percent), scoring chance for percentage (57.6 percent), and penalty-killing percentage (83.6 percent).

The Capitals, on the other hand, struggled against the Hurricanes at five-on-five. In their four games, the Caps saw just 36.5 percent of shot attempts, 43.3 percent of expected goals, and 43 percent of scoring chances.

A Key Area of Focus for the Capitals in the Upcoming Series

Staying out of the penalty box and limiting the Hurricanes’ chances at five-on-five will be a key area of focus for the Capitals in the upcoming series. The Hurricanes’ ability to dominate at five-on-five is a major strength for them, and the Capitals will need to find a way to counter that.

This may involve playing more defensively and limiting the Hurricanes’ chances, or finding ways to generate more offense at even strength. Whatever the strategy, the Capitals will need to find a way to match the Hurricanes’ intensity and determination at five-on-five.

Looking Ahead: The Road to the Second Round

The Schedule and National TV Coverage

The NHL has yet to release the full schedule for the series, but all games moving forward will be on national TV. The Capitals will have home-ice advantage, hosting the first two games of the series.

This will give them a chance to build momentum and get off to a strong start in the series. Playing on national TV can also add an extra layer of pressure and excitement to the games, which could benefit the Capitals.

The Hurricanes’ Strengths and Weaknesses

Sebastian Aho leads the Hurricanes in scoring, posting eight points (3g, 5a) in five games. Andrei Svechnikov, who took a one-punch KO in a fight with Alex Ovechkin during the 2019 series, led Carolina in goals with five.

Frederik Andersen suffered an undisclosed injury in Game 4 and was replaced in net by Pyotr Kochetkov for Game 5. He’s out day-to-day.

The Capitals’ Quest for Consistency and Success

Building on the momentum of their historic comeback will be key for the Capitals in the second round. They’ll need to stay focused and committed to their game plan if they want to make a deep run in the playoffs.

This may involve making some adjustments to their lineup or strategy, but ultimately, the Capitals will need to find a way to consistently perform at a high level if they want to succeed in the second round.

Conclusion

In a stunning turn of events, the Capitals have rewritten the script with a historic comeback, leaving the NHL in awe. As detailed in our article, the team’s remarkable recovery from a 3-1 deficit showcased their unyielding determination and resilience. With key players stepping up and a masterful game plan, the Capitals rallied to claim the win, sending shockwaves throughout the league.

The significance of this comeback cannot be overstated. It serves as a testament to the team’s never-say-die attitude and ability to adapt in the face of adversity. Moreover, this victory showcases the Capitals’ commitment to their fans, who have been vocal in their support throughout the season. As the team looks to build on this momentum, it will be fascinating to see how they continue to evolve and respond to challenges.

As the Capitals move forward, they will undoubtedly face new obstacles and hurdles. However, with their newfound confidence and trust in their abilities, they are poised to make a deep run in the playoffs. The question on everyone’s mind is: what’s next for this dynamic team? Will they continue to defy expectations and make a lasting impact on the NHL? One thing is certain – the Capitals have written a new chapter in their storied history, and fans are eagerly anticipating the next installment.
