This Monday the Supreme Court of India Refused to open theĀ Sterlite plant in Tuticorin by the Vedanta’s in Tamil Nadu, India.
Although, it has not stopped them from approaching in the High Court. The Bench Said thatĀ NGT doesn’t have the proper rights for Reopening the plant. But The bench which was headed by Justice R F Nariman said it is allowing Tamil Nadu’s appeal against the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order only on grounds of maintainability.
The court was setup for hearing a plea by the Vedanta group seeking for a direction to get thTamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to implement the NGT order which had set aside the government’s decision to close the plant.
The Back Story
The Environment pollution that the plant has done has been a problem for the unit, as around 13 people got killed and various injured on 22 May 2018 when the Tamil Nadu Police opened fire on the people who wereĀ protesting for the Hazards of the plant.
There Being, after a term of 6 days the Tamil Nadu Government ordered the Pollution Control board for the state to close the plant Permanently.
