Devotees of television’s foremost hacktivism drama can rejoice as it returns for a proper farewell.
The USA Network recently confirmed that techno-thriller Mr. Robot has entered production for a fourth and final season numbering at about 12 episodes, with filming slated to continue through the summer.
The show’s producers also noted that Academy Award-winner Rami Malek would reprise his role as cyber-security expert Elliot Alderson.
Of course, the very existence of season four hinged upon Malek’s return as the show’s protagonist, with production contingent on whether or not the actor would be available to shoot anytime soon given the scheduling conflicts arising from projects he signed for subsequent to his Oscar triumph, including his appearance in next year’s Bond film.
In addition to Malek, much of the lead cast are also expected to return, with Christian Slater leading the line as the show’s eponymous character, while stars Portia Doubleday and Michael Cristofer will also reprise their roles as Angela Moss and Philip Price, respectively. Rapper Joey Bada$$ has too reportedly been brought on-board yet again for season four, albeit with significant fan speculation that his character Leon is set to receive lesser screen-time for the show’s last hurrah.
Concerning the release date, fans can discern from season four’s production time-frame that it will likely premiere around the same time as its predecessor, which would be the months of Autumn. Creator Sam Esmail also announced that the show would run unto the Holiday season, stating that he envisioned the series finale as a Christmas special in the vein of erstwhile British television programs and that the entire story of the final season would take place during the 2015 Christmas week.
Esmail has also talked at length about the general direction of season four’s plot at multiple public forums, suggesting on each occasion that it would derive significant inspiration from the current state of global diplomacy and that the show wouldn’t be afraid to tread into uncharted territory for its final on-screen outing.
Upon release, season four of Mr. Robot will also be available to stream on Amazon Prime.
