The Ultimate Marvel Multiverse: A New Era of Heroes

There are some wild things happening in the Marvel multiverse lately. Heroes are returning, but not in the way we remember them, and the world is wrong. Very wrong. That, at least, is what’s going down in the new Ultimate Marvel line of comics, which has so far been uniformly excellent.

A brief primer for those of you who might not understand what’s going on with Ultimate Marvel: this is a new universe which has been twisted and distorted by a villain called The Maker (an evil alternate version of Reed Richards). The Maker has built a new universe in which its iconic heroes never had their origins, and is instead ruled by a shadowy cabal of villains. Fate ultimately intervenes, however, and heroes like Spider-Man and The Avengers are given their powers and told they need to fix this broken world.

Advert It’s top stuff, honestly. A Spider-Man who doesn’t get his powers until he’s already married with kids makes for a hugely different kind of hero, and just wait until you see who the Ultimate universe’s Doctor Doom is.

Nick Fury: Friend or Foe?

As reported by ComicBook, Chris Condon and Alessandro Cappuccio’s Ultimate Universe: One Year In one-shot will show us what role Nick Fury plays in this new world, although it’s too soon to tell whether he’s friend or foe.

Interestingly, this Fury more closely resembles the original Marvel Comics version of the character rather than the first Ultimate Universe Nick Fury, which would prove to be the template for the most well-known version of the character: played in the MCU by Samuel L. Jackson.

Preview pages appear to show Fury working with The Maker to round up heroes and meet with his cabal of villains, though Fury’s reputation as one of the most successful spies of all time could suggest he’s playing double agent here. We’ll have to wait and see.

“With Ultimate Universe: One Year In, my goals were simple: Create an entryway for new readers into the Ultimate Universe; reward longtime readers, especially those who have wanted more connective tissue between the Ultimate books; AND set the stage for the next year of stories, as we build towards the return of the Maker,” Camp told ComicBook.

This is why it’s so exciting for us comic book fans when a beloved character is introduced to the masses through a screen adaptation.

Ultimate X-Men: A New Take on Cyclops

That’s exactly what happened earlier this year when Cyclops captured the attention of viewers in the brilliant X-Men ‘97. Rather unusually for Marvel, X-Men ‘97 is not a part of the MCU but I’d still encourage you to watch what is a fantastic show.

It’s entertaining but it also makes for good adjacent viewing, if you want to familiarise yourself with the workings of the X-Men before the group makes its official MCU debut.

But it’s not X-Men ‘97’s Cyclops that I ultimately want to highlight today.

It’s time to shift back over to the world of Marvel Comics as a brand new iteration of Cyclops has been introduced in Ultimate X-Men, and it’s unlike any version of the character we’ve seen before.

Ultimate X-Men’s Cyclops is a young Japanese girl by the name of Natsu Tsukishima. The series essentially sees a young group of female X-Men go up against a Japanese mutant cult known as The Children of the Atom who believe that mutants are superior.

What makes this Cyclops different, outside of her identity, is the fact that she only shoots an optic blast from the one eye.

In Ultimate X-Men Issue #10, and I’ll warn you that spoilers lie ahead, Natsu loses control of her power during a conversation with her mother, killing her.

It’s a stark reminder of the burden that comes with having a power as deadly as Natsu’s.

We all fall victim to letting our emotions get the better of us on occasion, but for Natsu, that’s something that can come with much starker consequences.

Of course, it’s going to be interesting to see how this changes her going forwards – and this event is certainly not going to help the already tense relations between the humans and mutants.
