Red Carpet Glamour

Zoë Kravitz’s bold beauty look at the 2025 VF Oscars after-party was a true showstopper, with her cherry red manicure perfectly complementing her black Saint Laurent gown. According to her longtime nail artist, Betina Goldstein, the inspiration for the look was Karen Mulder at YSL S/S 1996 haute couture show, where the model had red lips, but Goldstein wanted to create a moment for Kravitz to show off her dress with red nails.

Gone are the days of long, blood-red nails, as Goldstein opted for a shorter, almond/oval-shaped nail to make the look feel effortless. The nail artist’s reference images, including Rita Hayworth in ‘Blood and Sand’ and Lana Turner at a 1984 premiere, showcased long, blood-red nails with glamorous white or black gowns, respectively. Goldstein wanted it to pop with the black but not feel so vintage, and the result was a modern take on a classic manicure shade.

The Resurgence of Short Nail Trend

With short nails having a resurgence over the past few seasons, it’s no surprise that Goldstein and Kravitz decided to take a classic manicure shade and infuse it with a modern twist. The result is a cherry red nail trend that is sure to dominate the fashion industry this spring, with a short and sweet shape to match.

Celebrity Beauty Inspiration

From cut to colour, total transformation to simple styling tips, take inspiration from our favourite red carpet styles of 2014 so far…

Luckily for us, there is always something new going on in the world of celebrity to inspire our next trip to the salon. And you’ll be glad to know that hairstyles in 2014 have seen a huge move towards simple, minimalistic styles that are easy to recreate at home.

In terms of length, it’s finally time to grow out the pixie crop that dominated Hollywood last year. ‘2014 is definitely the year of the midi,’ says Jodie Papworth of Headmasters. ‘We’ve seen so many clients asking for the just-below-shoulder length cuts which makes the hair look thicker and healthier.’

If you’re usually reaching for volumising products to achieve thickness and height, save your pennies this season, as straight and sleek is back – and stronger than ever. ‘The emphasis is on really healthy, shiny, full locks rather than overly styled layered hair,’ Jodie says. ‘Long hair is timeless and still as popular as ever.’

Up-dos are also big news this year. The key to this look is to keep it minimal: the zero-effort, scraped back look has been transformed to red carpet chic – but be sure to create volume up top to pull this look off.

If you like a challenge and simple style just isn’t your thing, high impact plaits and full volume curls have been seen on our favourite celebs in 2014, too. Jodie predicts that we should expect to see more twists, buns and braids ‘which can be dressed up or down depending on how you wear them.’

As for colour, the red carpets have been awash with natural shades, with last summer’s chunky highlights swapped for more subtle lighter hues, added to the end sections of hair. ‘This year traditional foils have fallen by the wayside, making room for more bespoke colour techniques like balayage and tissue lights,’ explains Jodie. ‘It’s all about creating super natural, tailored colour’. This is the perfect look to try if you want to lighten your hair for summer, but don’t want to sign up for six-weekly root touches for years to come.

Emma Stone’s Monochromatic Beauty Look

It’s a big night for Emma Stone. She’s nominated for Best Actress thanks to her incredible performance in Poor Things—and it’s safe to say that her Oscars red carpet look is an ode to the character that scored her the nomination. Her dress, a custom Louis Vuitton peplum design, could very well have been a part of Bella Baxter’s wardrobe. Her beauty, however? It was in line with Stone’s signature look. She took the 2024 makeup trend of monochromatic beauty to the next level, committing to pale pink on her cheeks, lips, and nails.

Stone’s pink face beat was created by her go-to makeup artist Rachel Goodwin. You can’t get her exact lip shade just yet: She’s the first to debut the new Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Big Lip Plumpgasm, which launches on April 4. The glossy pinky-peach hue is the perfect compliment to her pale pink manicure, which was created using one coat of Dazzle Dry nail polish in the shade Peacefully Me, and a second coat in the shade Fine China to create an icy finish.
