James Gunn Confirms, Suicide Squad 2 begins shooting this year, 2021 release date

Uncertainty about the successor to 2016’s Suicide Squad has been put to rest.

Reports from some of Hollywood’s most trusted entertainment tabloids this week have confirmed that James Gunn’s Suicide Squad 2 has wrapped pre-production and is all set to begin principal photography around September this year, with it scheduled to last up until January of 2020.

Unsurprisingly, the film will shoot almost entirely in Atlanta, a city that has played host to many mammoth superhero productions over the past half-a-decade, most notably Marvel’s the Avengers.

The second Suicide Squad will also mark the returns of stars such as Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, reprising their roles as Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller, respectively. Gunn, meanwhile, has also hired a spate of new actors the likes of Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, and even WWE superstar John Cena in yet unconfirmed roles.

What remains unclear are details about the film’s plot, with director Gunn having so far been cryptic about its story, and even refusing to address reports that it will be a reboot of sorts, rather than an actual sequel.

Of course, Suicide Squad 2 had been in a limbo of sorts over the past few months after its director went through much professional tumult.

Gunn had only been hired to helm the film in the first place due him being dropped from leading the concluding chapter of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy as a consequence for a controversial tweet he made last year.

Recently, though, higher-ups at Disney reverted their decision, and Gunn was reassigned to Guardians 3, meaning that he will now be leading flagship franchises for, both, the Marvel and DC Cinematic Universes. This also meant that both films could be scheduled accordingly currently that questions over Gunn’s future had been cleared.

Suicide Squad 2 will release in August 2021.
