Jason Statham shows no signs of slowing down following the release of A Working Man. The actor and martial artist is all set to lead Plane director Jean-François Richet’s Mutiny, which finds him on the run after his billionaire industrialist boss is murdered.

It has also now been confirmed that Statham will join forces with The Night Comes for Us and The Shadow Strays director Timo Tjahjanto for The Beekeeper 2, with Amazon MGM Studios recently picking up the rights. On top of all that, the action star will also unite with Angel Has Fallen director Ric Roman Waugh for an as-yet-untitled action tale about a recluse living on a remote Scottish island who, after rescuing a girl, unleashes a perilous sequence of events that culminate in an attack on his home, compelling him to face his turbulent history.

The John Wick Franchise Connection

The John Wick franchise has become known for its incredible stunts and fight choreography, including what has become known as “gun-fu.” While gun fights and hand-to-hand combat seem to be commonplace in the world of action movies now, when the Wachowskis brought the idea to mainstream in The Matrix, it was just the beginning of where it would later go thanks to Chad Stahelski and the John Wick franchise.

Jason Statham is undeniably one of the silver screen’s most beloved action heroes, and in 2012, he starred in the underrated thriller Safe. While speaking to SlashFilm about the new John Wick documentary Wick is Pain, Stahelski revealed that Statham’s movie Safe almost became the pioneer of a punch-kick-shoot style of fighting rather than John Wick.

The director went on to explain that the reason it didn’t happen was that Statham’s movie was just too grounded to incorporate the elaborate fight sequences. He said: “Logistically, that would be so odd for that movie. Tonally, logistically, financially, it was never going to work. We were the goofy ones who were pitching it, knowing that there’s no way it was a great character choice for him. Some of the Aikido, and the individual moves, sure. But myself, Jason, and Boaz the director, were like, “Yeah, it’s cool, but…”And there’s a little hint of it in there, when Jason’s doing the disarms in the restaurant and stuff. It was in there. And Jason could do it all, no problem, and fing Jason’s awesome, man. I love watching his s. It’s just, it wasn’t the right character, tone, and movie for that.”

Jason Statham’s Underrated Thriller Safe

Jason Statham movies are almost always guaranteed to stir up a storm. Whether blasting through theaters, or shooting up streaming charts, there is just something about those deep stares and shiny bonce that really makes people want to sit up and pay attention.

Safe is a movie that became a mixed bag when it came to reviews. Safe was released in 2012, and became one of those rare times that audiences and critics saw eye to eye on a film. Both scored the movie 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. While many complained about the “over-edited and under-plotted” final product, the film is certainly not as middle-of-the-road as its reviews suggest.

Also, it stars Jason Statham, and that means, despite only generating a minor successful box office haul of $40 million, the film lives on via several streaming platforms. Statham takes the lead as another man with a mysterious past, starring alongside James Franco, Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth, Rachelle Lefevre, Frank Grillo, and Clancy Brown.

The Beekeeper’s Streaming Buzz

Not only is Jason Statham’s tale of a father failing to escape his violent past climbing the Prime Video charts, but so is his tale of a passionate beekeeper who also fails to attempt his violent past. Sometimes, you’ve just got to stick with what you know.

Released last year, The Beekeeper is directed by David Ayer from a script written by Kurt Wimmer, and stars Jason Statham alongside Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons.
