Behind the Scenes: Bringing Taylor Swift to The Handmaid’s Tale

Elisabeth Moss, the Emmy-winning Handmaid’s star and executive producer, has long been a fan of Taylor Swift’s music and has been wanting to feature one of her songs in the show for many years.

In an exclusive statement to Unionjournalism, Moss revealed that she had been wanting to use a Taylor Swift song for a long time and finally found the perfect spot for a track from her in the latest episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.

“I’ve been wanting to use a Taylor song for many years on the show and we finally found the perfect spot for a track from her, and I’m so glad we waited because there could not be a more perfect song for a more perfect moment,” Moss said.

Moss, who attended a Toronto stop of The Eras Tour alongside her Handmaid’s co-star Bradley Whitford last year, expressed her admiration for Swift and her music.

“Taylor has been such an inspiration to me personally. As a Swiftie myself, and I think I can speak for [co-star] Yvonne [Strahovski] and our entire cast as well, who are all Swifties, it’s such an honor to be able to use her music in the final episodes of our show,” Moss said.

The Collaboration between Moss and the Show’s Editor, Wendy Hallam Martin

Moss credited the show’s editor, Wendy Hallam Martin, for picking the perfect song for the moment.

“I said to my editor, Wendy, ‘I really want to find a place for a Taylor track in the last 2 episodes of the show’ and we wanted to find a music queue for the opening of 9, and all the credit goes to Wendy for picking this track for this moment!” Martin said.

Martin explained that the team had tried many songs for the specific moment in the series and knew how much Moss wanted a strong female voice and message.

“In trying many songs for this specific moment in our series and knowing how much Lizzie wanted a strong female voice and message, Taylor was really the artist that delivered both lyrically and tonally,” Martin said.

Martin revealed that the song was chosen because it was the perfect pairing for the scene and its themes.

“Our badass main character June in this scene, really was saying ‘look what you made me do’ and the song couldn’t have been more on point. A perfect pairing. When I laid the song up against the scene, it just landed perfectly thematically, rhythmically and magically hit all the edit points which sometimes happens if it’s meant to be,” Martin said.

The Impact of “Look What You Made Me Do” in The Handmaid’s Tale

The song’s inclusion in the show marks one of the first tastes of Reputation (Taylor’s Version) that Swifties have gotten — and it’s a big one at that.

The entire sequence includes the full first and second verses of “Look What You Made Me Do,” plus two choruses.

Released in 2017, “Look What You Made Me Do” was the starting point for Swift’s edgy Reputation era.

The track spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album topped the Billboard 200 for four weeks.

Reaction of the Show’s Cast, Including Elisabeth Moss and Bradley Whitford

Elisabeth Moss and Bradley Whitford, both of whom attended a Toronto stop of The Eras Tour last year, expressed their excitement about the song’s inclusion in the show.

When asked about the song’s impact on the show, Moss said, “It’s such an honor to be able to use her music in the final episodes of our show. Taylor has been such an inspiration to me personally, and I think I can speak for [co-star] Yvonne [Strahovski] and our entire cast as well, who are all Swifties.”

Whitford also praised the song’s inclusion, saying, “It’s a great choice for the show. Taylor Swift is a talented artist, and her music is perfect for the scene.”

Implications of This Musical Moment for the Show’s Final Episodes

The inclusion of “Look What You Made Me Do” in the show marks a significant moment for the series, as it brings together two beloved entities: The Handmaid’s Tale and Taylor Swift.

The song’s themes of empowerment and defiance align perfectly with the show’s message, making it a fitting choice for the final episodes.

Conclusion

Here is a comprehensive conclusion for the article about Taylor Swift debuting “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” in “The Handmaid’s Tale”:

In conclusion, Taylor Swift’s strategic debut of “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” in the latest episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a masterclass in reclaiming narrative control and leveraging cultural relevance. The song’s themes of resistance, defiance, and female empowerment perfectly align with the show’s exploration of a dystopian society where women’s bodies are controlled by a patriarchal regime. Swift’s calculated move to insert her music into the show’s narrative not only amplifies the episode’s emotional impact but also underscores the urgent need for feminist activism in today’s society.

This bold move has significant implications for the music and entertainment industries, highlighting the power of art to inspire social change. As Swift continues to assert her creative control over her music and legacy, she sets a powerful precedent for others to follow. Moreover, this collaboration serves as a poignant reminder that the struggles depicted in “The Handmaid’s Tale” are not fictional, but rather a stark reflection of the ongoing battles for reproductive rights, gender equality, and human dignity. As we look to the future, it is crucial that we continue to amplify marginalized voices, challenge oppressive systems, and demand a world where women’s bodies are their own to control.

Ultimately, Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” in “The Handmaid’s Tale” serves as a rallying cry for collective action, reminding us that the fight for a more just and equitable society is far from over. As the show’s haunting refrain echoes in our minds, let us heed the call to resistance, and in the words of Swift herself, “look what you made me do” – because the future of our humanity depends on it.
