Johnny Depp has been stealing hearts as both heroes and villains since the 1980s. But things between Depp and his wife got dark for a while back in 2016. And this may have left an impact on his career forever.
In 2016, Johnny Depp’s wife of a year, Amber Heard filed for divorce. She alleged physical and verbal abuse at the hands of her husband and obtained a temporary restraining order from the courts. A video leaked over the internet was published by TMZ, which even showed him getting angry in their kitchen and smashing a wine glass while yelling abuse. It was reportedly filmed by Amber herself.
In 2017, the couple’s divorce was finalized with a settlement of 7 million dollars. They also attempted to clear the air in a joint statement by saying that their relationship, while volatile at times was “intensely passionate” and “always bound by love.”
The Fans: With Major Doubts
A lot of people weren’t completely put at ease by the couple’s explanation. A large portion of Harry Potter fans demanded that he be fired from the cast of from his then-upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Johnny Depp was set to and did play the villain, Gellert Grindelwald in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Even Daniel Radcliffe said they he could understand why people were “frustrated” with the casting.

Depp eventually pulled off a stunning and exceptionally brilliant performance in the film despite all the negativity surrounding his person. He made for a dark, mysterious and powerful Grindelwald, making a lot of fans quite happy that he wasn’t replaced in the end.
The People Who Stuck With Him
Depp came quite close to being banished from the Hollywood world in the light of MeToo accusations like many before him. However, Warner Bros and J.K. Rowling’s decision to keep him on in the movie saved him from too much damage. Rowling even said that she was genuinely happy that he was playing a major character.
His latest performance impressed everyone, and since he wasn’t dropped and his wife appears to have forgiven him, maybe all the hard feelings will go away.
Only time will tell.
