Sorry Fans but Taron Egerton won’t be playing Wolverine in Marvel Phase 4

The internet, more particularly its bastion of comic-book fans on social media platforms, has been unendingly speculating on the future of the X-Men universe ever since the cinematic rights were returned home to Marvel Studios earlier this year.

Given that their fate now rests firmly in the hands of Kevin Feige, and considering just how bad of a taste 2019’s Dark Phoenix left in the mouths of the franchise’s loyal supporters, a large-scale makeover was always on the cards for the litany of X-Men characters – and re-casting them for on-screen outings an unquestionable priority.

Thus ensued the silly season of speculation about all the Hollywood stars that would potentially fill the now-vacated mutant shoes and join Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with everyone’s favourite clawed anti-hero, Wolverine.

Of course, the character is the unarguable face of the franchise, and the cult status Wolverine achieved due to Hugh Jackman’s excellent portrayal through the period of almost two decades would be tough to replicate.

Initially, Zac Efron was suggested as a potential choice. Efron would be one of the few that could achieve the standard of physical fitness set by Jackman, while we have even seen him fine-tuning his acting chops over recent years, especially with his portrayal of serial killer Ted Bundy.

But, later, it was Taron Egerton who emerged as the subject of headlines.

Aside from the fact that the actor has joked about playing the character in the past, and even posted a frankly fantastic cosplay picture, Egerton would be an appropriate choice was Marvel to showcase a much younger Logan learning the ropes.

In addition, Egerton even worked with Jackman last year on Eddie the Eagle and shares cordial relations with the Australian superstar, something that could lend itself well in his quest to understand the character truly.

But, alas, it wasn’t to be.

Speaking in an interview, the Welshman outright denied that he was approached by Marvel or was even on their radar for the role, saying ‘That one I think is just a rumour. As far as I’m aware it’s unfounded. I don’t know if I’m quite grisly enough.’

The actor did, however, mention that he would be up for it was Feige and his cabal to come calling, ‘I mean if the people at Marvel think I am then great, let’s go.’
