EL PASO, Texas – The El Paso region sheriff’s deputy died at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, in the shot during a San Elizario traffic stop on Friday
According to the El Paso Area Sheriff’s office confirmed the death of Deputy Peter Herrera in a statement on Facebook.
“He was a great man who was looked up to by many,” El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles said at a news conference “We suffered a tremendous loss today. Not just his family, but each and every member of this agency and the community as a whole.”

Deputy Peter Herrera was shot after stopping a vehicle in San Elizario. Authorities say, 27-years-old Facundo Chavez, shot multiples times when the deputy asked the driver to step out of the car. The suspect is charged with capital murder of a peace officer.
