Lil Nas X’s Catchy EP Proves He’s More Than A One Hit Meme-Wonder

The internet broke in early 2019 when rapper Lil Nas X dropped his experimental country- hip hop, tik tok anthem Old Town Road. It reigned supreme on the billboard for three whole months. Later, it got renditioned with a feature from the man, the myth, the legend, Billy Ray Cyrus himself.

But, the 19-year-old musician has proved he’s more than a one-hit wonder, his new EP, 7, features 7 tracks along with old town road, and is a 19-minute extended play, “Panini” and “Rodeo” are the focal points of the album, with the former featuring songwriting from Kurt Cobain, interestingly.

National Public Radio shared their thoughts about the EP and his artistry: But what’s compelling about Nas X’s range of styles across 7 is how specific his points of reference are, from dour grunge to bratty pop-punk to bright, maximalist electronics. The bizarrely charming “Panini” channels a Rae Sremmurd cover of Nirvana we never knew we needed. “Kick It” takes Travis Scott-style vocal modulation to its uncanniest extreme, complete with string arrangements and a beat that sounds like Hudson Mohawke recording in a gothic monastery. The weirdly poignant “C7osure (You Like)” is a house ballad filtered through an emo-rap lens, with a four-on-the-floor beat by frequent Drake collaborator Boi-1da.”

After having the song be kicked off the Billboard charts for not being country enough, which, ironically made the song into the loving meme it is today, Lil Nas X tweeted a video of him y’all think they gone let me on the rock charts?” while bopping out to his song Bring U Down.
