Natasha Lyonne talks about Russian Doll Season 2 & potential release date

Netflix’s highly-acclaimed comedy-drama Russian Doll is gathering all the plaudits during 2019’s awards season.

Aside from having been decorated at a plethora of ceremonies already, the series has received a massive 13 nominations at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, solidifying its status as one of the streaming platform’s most valuable intellectual properties.

Co-created by Amy Poehler and Natasha Lyonne, who also stars as series protagonist Nadia Vulvokov, Russian Doll follows the journey of a 36-year-old woman who keeps reliving the night of her birthday over and over again in a Groundhog Day-esque scenario.

As aforementioned, the series raked in critical praise in copious amounts, while also becoming an instant hit with the general public, currently holding an 87% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Given this, Netflix unsurprisingly greenlit a second season back in June this year, and it seems that we finally have word on where the series might be headed in terms of plot, though in a fashion that’s cryptic at best.

Speaking about writing the second season on the eve of the series receiving multiple nominations at the Emmy Awards, Lyonne said “The early notes are pretty heavy. So it definitely does not become a show about dating in New York, I will say that. That is an anti-spoiler, an inverse non-spoiler. Not gonna become that. No shade on that! I’m just saying. It also is not going to be one of the prequels to Game of Thrones. So two things it’s not. I’ve now, by process of elimination, have given you a lot.”

We haven’t yet been provided with a release window for the upcoming season, but in the meanwhile, Season One of Russian Doll can be streamed on Netflix.
