Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison passed away recently

Toni Morrison, who won Nobel Prize for Literature, died on August 5, 2019, at the age of 88 in New York City, U.S.

Chloe Ardelia Wofford aka Toni Morrison, was born on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio, U.S. She was born and raised in Ohio only and graduated from Howard University in 1953 and for further studies at Cornell University.

Toni Morrison: Background and family

Toni Morrison belonged to an African American family and was second among the four children in a working-class. She was enrolled at the Howard University in 1949. She has seen so much discrimination based on color as she grew up.

After some time, she started working as an editor in 1965 for L.W. Singer in Syracuse, New York. Two years later, Toni Morrison transferred in New York City where she became first black woman editor in the fiction department.

Toni Morrison was known for writing like novels, literature and was a teacher too. Her notable works were Beloved, Song of Solomon, Tar Baby, The Bluest Eye.

The reason behind her death was her short illness, as confirmed by her family. The whole literature felt her absence and was shocked to their very core.

Family’s words: According to her family Morrison was an extremely devoted mother, grandmother, and aunt. She passed away peacefully at night, surrounded by family and friends.

The consummate writer who treasured the written word, whether her own, her students or others, she read voraciously and was most at home when writing. Although her passing represents a tremendous loss, we are grateful she had a long, well-lived life.
