The Leakage In Earth’s Core Baffled Researchers, Know The Consequences


    Would you ever believe if someone tells you that our planet is leaking and that is not something that started now, but it is on for the past 2.5 billion years? No, it doesn’t mean that the earth material is going out from it. A study recently revealed that earth’s core is not only leaking some of its contents into the mantle plumes but the outer surface too.

    Earth’s Core Is Leaking Into Mantle

    Its been a debate from a long time that does the earth core and mantle exchange their contents with each other or not? ‘The Conversation’ where scientists publicly release their research has brought this shocking happening into the view. “Our findings suggest some core material does transfer into the base of these mantle plumes, and the core has been leaking this material for the past 2.5 billion years,” the researchers explained their finding on the website.

    The contents that core is sharing with mantle are tungsten (W) and hafnium (Hf). Tungsten has its presence in the core of the earth and is the element 74 of the periodic table which is largely made up of iron and nickel while the second element is lithophile, which can be found in silicate-rich mantle.

    “Therefore, the chemical exchange between the core and the source of mantle plumes could be detectable in the 182W/184W ratio of ocean island basalts,” that comes from the plumes of earth’s mantle, researchers stated in the study.

    Mantle And Surface Are Exchanging Thier Element Too

    The second finding has shown the relation between the mantle and surface area of our leaking planet. At the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia, the Réunion Island and Kerguelen Archipelago hotspots in the Indian Ocean the researchers have discovered the rocks which oozed out from the mantle.

    The researchers concluded after finding a different tungsten ratio in the present and early days rocks. “The change in the 182W/184W ratio of the mantle indicates that tungsten from the core has been leaking into the mantle for a long time,” ‘The Conversation’ reads.

    Further, the research is stated as “Subduction, the term used for rocks from Earth’s surface descending into the mantle, takes oxygen-rich material from the surface into the deep mantle as an integral component of plate tectonics,” the researchers wrote in The Conversation. “Experiments show that [an] increase in oxygen concentration at the core-mantle boundary could cause tungsten to separate the core and into the mantle.”

    Or it could be like the oxygen level in the outer surface is increased as the inner surface is solidified after the earth’s formation. Expectedly the researchers stated that “In this case, our new results could tell us something about the evolution of the core, including the origin of Earth’s magnetic field.”
