An asteroid called City Killer by Duffy came closer to the Earth than the moon and scientists did not have an idea about it because it was heading from the sun’s direction
Scientists revealed that this week, an asteroid called as a “city killer” came closer to the Earth than the moon and they had no idea about the same.
An Asteroid titled as Asteroid 2019 OK came hurtling towards the Earth at a speed of nearly 15 miles a second, before flying past.
NASA has reported that it was about 45,000 miles from Earth on this Thursday.
One of the astronomer professors, Alan Duffy, said :
“It would have hit with over 30 times the energy of the atomic blast at Hiroshima,”
And he called the zooming space rock a “city killer.”
According to the Astronomers, this asteroid causes no immediate threat.
They have also admitted that they had no idea that a giant rock was headed to our Earth as it came from the direction of the sun. Since the asteroid is about the size of a large boulder, still it became visible only a few days back.
There are almost 20,000 asteroids near the Earth, and they occasionally make an appearance to the Earth.
In 2013, one of the asteroids slammed into Russia and injured almost 1,600 people.
In the conference held in April, a question was asked from all the Scientists from all over the world that how to respond to make belief situation that an asteroid causing danger or threat to destroy a major city might be on track to strike the Earth in eight years.
Then one of the scientists responded that we might use space ships to give a nudge to the asteroid.
Dr. Lori Glaze, director of planetary science at NASA said :
“All we have to do is change its speed a little faster or a little slower so that when it crosses Earth’s orbit, it crosses either in front of us or behind us.”
