Amazon has started working The Boys Season 2 alongside Karl Urban

Amazon Prime has ramped up their production in recent months to achieve parity with existential rivals Netflix, and it’s their faith in content that can be found on the platform that has led to the instantaneous renewal of a series which captured the hearts of viewers only this past week.

Released on the 26th of July, The Boys is a superhero black-comedy series featuring a group of vigilantes that try to tackle a cabal of heroes that have been corrupted by wealth and fame.

But, even before the series debuted this week, Amazon had already renewed it for Season Two, a prudent decision given that the first outing received positive reviews and held a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The second season has been rumored to have already began shooting back in June, and is expected to last till around Winter, upon the completion of which it would enter a long post-production stage and release presumably around Summer 2020, with stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Anthony Starr, and Erin Moriarty each set to return.

The series is based on the eponymous comic-book run that lasted for 72 issues from October 2006 to November 2012 and was helmed by multiple publishing houses including Wildstorm and Dynamite Entertainment.

Authored by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robertson, the acclaimed series was nominated for an Eisner Award and was announced in 2008 to have been cleared for a film adaptation, with Academy Award-winning writer and director Adam McKay attached to the project back in 2010.

The film, however, was summarily scrapped after spending time in production hell for many years, with the rights later finding their way to Cinemax, who hired Seth Rogen to helm a television series, and it was after the failure of this endeavour to be produced that The Boys finally fell into Prime Video’s lap.

The Boys’ first season can now be streamed on Amazon Prime.
